The Weaponization of LGBTQ+ Opposition: It’s About Power, Not Morality

Why are so many far-right politicians obsessed with LGBTQ+ people? Why do they spend so much time legislating who we can love, how we identify, or what bathroom we use? Spoiler: It’s not about morality, family values, or religion. It’s about power.

Far-right opposition to LGBTQ+ rights is the result of a deliberate, decades-long strategy to manipulate voters by exploiting fear and division. Let’s break it down.

It Started with the Southern Strategy

In the 1960s, when the Civil Rights Movement shifted the Democratic Party toward racial equality, white Southern Democrats began leaving in droves. The Republican Party saw an opportunity to exploit their anger and fears. Using coded language like “states’ rights” and “law and order,” they appealed to Southern white racists without openly endorsing segregation. This was the Southern Strategy, and it reshaped American politics by weaponizing division for political gain.

But race wasn’t the only tool in this playbook.

The Religious Right Joins the Fight

By the 1970s, Republicans realized they could tap into another powerful group: conservative Christians. For decades, evangelicals stayed out of politics. But strategists like Paul Weyrich knew that mobilizing them could be a game-changer. They needed an issue to unify the Religious Right, and they found it in abortion.

Here’s the kicker: abortion wasn’t a major issue for evangelicals before the 1970s. It was deliberately reframed as a moral crisis to rally this voting bloc. This same playbook would soon be used against LGBTQ+ communities.

Targeting LGBTQ+ Communities

In 1977, Anita Bryant launched the infamous “Save Our Children” campaign, claiming gay people were trying to “recruit” children. This introduced the now-familiar rhetoric that LGBTQ+ people are a threat to kids. Sound familiar? It’s the same baseless claim that fuels today’s anti-LGBTQ+ panic.

Bryant’s campaign repealed anti-discrimination protections in Florida and proved that fearmongering about LGBTQ+ rights could mobilize conservative voters. The far-right took notice and doubled down.

The AIDS Epidemic: Exploiting a Crisis

In the 1980s, the AIDS epidemic devastated the gay community. Instead of compassion, the far right exploited this tragedy. Leaders like Jerry Falwell called AIDS “God’s punishment,” while the Reagan administration stayed silent, allowing the crisis to worsen. The suffering of LGBTQ+ people was politically useful to reinforce harmful stereotypes and further stigmatize the community.

Marriage Equality and Trans Rights: New Targets, Same Playbook

By the 1990s and 2000s, the far right shifted its focus to same-sex marriage, framing it as a threat to “traditional family values.” Campaigns like California’s Proposition 8 used fear-based ads to convince voters that legalizing marriage equality would harm children and destroy families. It wasn’t about protecting marriage; it was about rallying conservative voters.

More recently, the far right has targeted transgender people with bathroom bills, bans on gender-affirming care, and attacks on trans athletes. They claim these measures “protect women and children,” but studies show no evidence of increased danger from trans-inclusive policies. It’s just another boogeyman to distract from real issues.

The Hypocrisy of “Biblical” Opposition

Let’s talk about the Bible. Far-right politicians love to claim that their opposition to LGBTQ+ rights is “biblical.” But here’s the truth: if you use scripture to condemn LGBTQ+ people, you must also accept what the Bible says about selling your daughter into slavery (Exodus 21:7), banning mixed fabrics (Leviticus 19:19), and endorsing slavery (Ephesians 6:5).

Cherry-picking verses to justify discrimination isn’t faith; it’s hypocrisy. This isn’t about religion—it’s about control.

The Truth

The far-right’s opposition to LGBTQ+ rights has never been about protecting families or morality. It’s about creating a scapegoat, distracting voters, and consolidating political power. By exploiting fear and division, they’ve turned LGBTQ+ people into a political target.

But here’s the good news: you don’t have to fall for it. Question their motives. Follow the money. Stand with love and equality.

The real threat to society isn’t LGBTQ+ people. It’s the politicians who exploit hatred to hold onto power. Share this post, spread the truth, and fight for a future that includes everyone.
