{"id":981,"date":"2024-08-04T14:29:22","date_gmt":"2024-08-04T14:29:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/america-project.org\/?p=981"},"modified":"2024-08-05T15:00:38","modified_gmt":"2024-08-05T15:00:38","slug":"battleground-state-ag-worries-trump-wont-accept-loss-to-harris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/america-project.org\/index.php\/2024\/08\/04\/battleground-state-ag-worries-trump-wont-accept-loss-to-harris\/","title":{"rendered":"Battleground state AG worries Trump won\u2019t accept loss to Harris"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally published by <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2024\/07\/michigan-ag-worries-trump-wont-accept-loss-harris\/\">The 19th<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel worries that former President Donald Trump may not accept the results of the upcoming general election if he loses \u2014 in part because of whom he might lose to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy belief is this: If Donald Trump had such a difficult time conceding that he lost to another older White man, he is definitely not going to be OK in the event that he loses a presidential election to a younger Black woman,\u201d Nessel told reporters Monday, referencing Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 expected place at the top of the Democratic ticket. \u201cAnd I am very concerned about what plans he and his allies might have to be disruptive to the 2024 election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nessel is the top prosecutor in a battleground state that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/18\/politics\/michigan-fake-electors\/index.html\">at the epicenter of efforts by Trump and some Republicans to overturn the 2020 presidential election<\/a>. She is now among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/05\/11\/trump-fake-electors-charges-00157440\">a handful of prosecutors<\/a> around the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/ag\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/AG\/releases\/2023\/July\/Felony-Complaints-Redacted-combined.pdf\">who are criminally charging so-called fake electors<\/a> \u2014 people who claimed falsely that they were electors for Trump in the 2020 election despite his loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump continues to sow doubt about America\u2019s elections in his third bid for the presidency. During the Republican Party\u2019s convention in Wisconsin, he claimed falsely that cheating occurred in the 2020 elections. At a recent campaign rally, he speculated without evidence that cheating will occur in the upcoming election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harris\u2019 historic bid \u2014 she would be the first woman president, and the first Black and South Asian-American woman president, if elected \u2014 has already made her <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2024\/07\/racist-misogynist-online-disinformation-is-being-used-against-kamala-harris-campaign\/\">the target of racist and sexist online attacks<\/a>. Trump, who <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2024\/07\/rnc-trump-masculinity\/\">appeared to be courting the electoral power of men in recent messaging<\/a>, has a history of personal attacks against women of color who hold power. That includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/22\/donald-trump-lashes-out-after-ny-ag-letitia-james-files-fraud-lawsuit.html\">New York Attorney General Letitia James<\/a>, \u200b\u200bwho has investigated Trump for alleged business fraud, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/14\/us\/elections\/trump-georgia-fani-willis-truth-social.html\">Fani Willis, a district attorney in Georgia<\/a> who is prosecuting alleged election interference involving Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden announced July 21 that he will not seek reelection for president. Harris has tentatively received enough support from delegates to become her party\u2019s nominee, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/24\/politics\/cnn-poll-kamala-harris-donald-trump\/index.html\">and recent polling shows a tightening race<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nessel, a Democrat, added that she isn\u2019t making predictions about the outcome of the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is my job as attorney general to defend the will of Michigan voters \u2014 whatever they might be. And so if Donald Trump receives more votes than our expected nominee, Kamala Harris \u2026 if that happens and he wins the election, then I\u2019m going to be just as determined, just as tenacious to defend his win, because that\u2019s my job,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nessel made her remarks about Trump and Harris at an elections-related journalism training event hosted by the National Press Foundation. A reporter asked the attorney general about one of her biggest concerns with 100 days to go before the November 5 election. Nessel noted Trump has indicated that he won\u2019t accept the results of the upcoming election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s already said if he doesn\u2019t win, it\u2019s because it was stolen. And I mean, that is so frightening \u2014 \u2018Either I win, or it\u2019s not fair,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a presidential debate in late June, Trump said he would accept the results of the election <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7SclmwoA6vg\">if it is a \u201cfair and legal and good election.\u201d<\/a> Separately, Trump told a group of Christian voters last week that they \u201cwon&#8217;t have to vote anymore\u201d if he\u2019s elected in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChristians, get out and vote, just this time. You won\u2019t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what? It\u2019ll be fixed, it\u2019ll be fine. You won\u2019t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians,\u201d he said at Turning Point Action\u2019s \u201cBelievers Summit\u201d in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comments have spurred a backlash from some Democrats who believe Trump was implying he would not allow another U.S. presidential election if he won. Trump told Fox News personality Laura Ingraham in an interview that aired Monday that he had not heard the criticism. When Ingraham asked the former president to clarify his remarks, he didn\u2019t address it directly and instead repeatedly claimed that Christians do not turn out to vote in large numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the start of Trump\u2019s first presidential bid nearly a decade ago, he has questioned the validity of America\u2019s elections. In 2016, he claimed without proof that millions of undocumented immigrants voted in the election. In 2020, he sought to cast doubt about his loss to Biden and tried to overturn election results in Georgia and through the support of fake electors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nessel said she and other state officials are preparing for the elections through regular meetings with local clerks, officials and law enforcement. Still, she said she\u2019s more concerned about the 2024 election than four years ago, in part because some people have lost faith and confidence in the integrity of elections \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/resources\/news\/2021\/03\/02\/more-than-250-audits-confirm-accuracy-and-integrity-of-michigans-election\">despite multiple audits and reviews of Michigan\u2019s election results<\/a>. She credited the legislature with passing new laws aimed at ensuring fake electors cannot repeat what they did in 2020, and making sure election certification cannot be held up for an invalid reason. State lawmakers have also expanded voting access following a ballot initiative that passed in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the ultimate swing state, and it\u2019s really a microcosm of America, and our public officials have been bolstering our state\u2019s defenses and trying to close loopholes in the law as they\u2019re identified,\u201d she
