{"id":1406,"date":"2024-08-18T19:31:12","date_gmt":"2024-08-18T19:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/america-project.org\/?p=1406"},"modified":"2024-08-19T11:01:58","modified_gmt":"2024-08-19T11:01:58","slug":"far-right-influencers-are-turning-against-trumps-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/america-project.org\/index.php\/2024\/08\/18\/far-right-influencers-are-turning-against-trumps-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Far-Right Influencers Are Turning Against Trump\u2019s Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"section-lead\">Far-right influencers<\/span> are standing by their man\u2014but not his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> on Sunday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2024\/08\/18\/trump-campaign-nick-fuentes-groypers-hard-right-criticism\/\">detailed <\/a>how several far-right figures with large online followings\u2014including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2023\/01\/nick-fuentes\/\">white supremacist Nick Fuentes<\/a> and activists Laura Loomer and Candace Owens\u2014have been stirring discord by publicly criticizing the Trump campaign, arguing that he needs new leadership who will direct him to take harder-line stances on topics like race and immigration.<\/p>\n<p>Fuentes <a href=\"https:\/\/link.motherjones.com\/public\/29874151\">dined with Trump at Mar-a-Lago<\/a> in 2022 and demonstrated how much influence he gained since his beginnings as a \u201cfringe YouTube star,\u201d as my former colleague Ali Breland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2023\/01\/nick-fuentes\/\">reported<\/a>. Just last week, Trump\u2019s running mate Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2024\/08\/the-wildest-things-jd-vance-said-in-his-sunday-morning-media-blitz\/\">called<\/a> Fuentes \u201ca total loser.\u201d But Fuentes <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickJFuentes\/status\/1821767696670765263\">posted<\/a> on X earlier this month, \u201cWe support Trump, but his campaign has been hijacked by the same consultants, lobbyists, &amp; donors that he defeated in 2016, and they\u2019re blowing it. Without serious changes we are headed for a catastrophic loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Tonight I declared a new Groyper War against the Trump campaign.<\/p>\n<p>We support Trump, but his campaign has been hijacked by the same consultants, lobbyists, &amp; donors that he defeated in 2016, and they&#8217;re blowing it.<\/p>\n<p>Without serious changes we are headed for a catastrophic loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nicholas J. Fuentes (@NickJFuentes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NickJFuentes\/status\/1821767696670765263?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 9, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Fuentes, who has more than 390,000 followers on X, has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickJFuentes\/status\/1822666902797246735\">made racist attacks<\/a> against Vance\u2019s Indian-American wife, Usha, and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickJFuentes\/status\/1822703660704383178\">pilloried Vance<\/a> for his past criticism of Trump. He has also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickJFuentes\/status\/1821955102015394109\">slammed<\/a> the Trump campaign for disavowing Project 2025\u2014though probably to Fuentes\u2019s delight, the links between the former president and Project 2025 are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2024\/07\/trump-project-2025-heritage-foundation-nothing-to-do-jd-vance-book\/\"> deep and likely durable.<\/a> He <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickJFuentes\/status\/1822670505662353456\">called for the campaign to get rid of<\/a> chief strategist Chris LaCivita and senior adviser Susie Wiles. Fuentes <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NickJFuentes\/status\/1824258876125917571\">claimed<\/a> \u201cvictory\u201d this week after the Trump campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/08\/15\/trump-campaign-brings-corey-lewandowski-back-on-board-00174155\">hired<\/a> 2016 campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Post <\/em>reported that two days before Fuentes\u2019s tweet, Laura Loomer, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LauraLoomer\/status\/1821373813956739143\">1.2 million followers on the platform<\/a>, said Trump surrogates looked \u201cweak\u201d on television, adding that the campaign \u201cneeds to change FAST because we can\u2019t talk about a stolen election for another 4 years.\u201d A year ago, Loomer <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LauraLoomer\/status\/1690831359000948737?s=20\">posted<\/a> a video to X with Trump from his Bedminster golf club in which he called her \u201cvery special\u201d and said he appreciated her support.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Loomer <img  title=\"\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em; max-height: 1em;\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/15.0.3\/72x72\/1f91d.png\"  alt=\"1f91d Far-Right Influencers Are Turning Against Trump\u2019s Campaign\"  \/>Trump<\/p>\n<p>Best President Ever. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nBFNAbOSNe0\">said<\/a> on her podcast this week, \u201cI\u2019m just not sure who is driving the MAGA bus anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His most extreme supporters are joined by top Republicans who also think Trump needs to change his strategy\u2014but their prescription differs. Former UN Ambassador and one-time aspiring Republican presidential candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/nikki-haley-pleads-with-trump-to-be-someone-he-is-not\">Nikki Haley<\/a> and former Trump adviser <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4825389-kellyanne-conway-donald-trump-kamala-harris-insults-policy-2024\/\">Kellyanne Conway<\/a> are among the top Republicans who have said Trump should refrain from launching ad hominem personal attacks and focus more on Harris\u2019s policy positions. On <em>Meet the Press<\/em> on Sunday, even Trump acolyte Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MeetThePress\/status\/1825166124960395506\">said<\/a>, \u201cEvery day we\u2019re not talking about her policy choices\u2026is a good day for her and a bad day for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">WATCH: Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LindseyGrahamSC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LindseyGrahamSC<\/a> (R) says \u201cpolicy is the key to the White House,\u201d while Donald Trump focuses on personal attacks against Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have a policy debate, he wins. Donald Trump the provocateur, the showman, may not win this election.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HnKaq4nlo4\">pic.twitter.com\/HnKaq4nlo4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Meet the Press (@MeetThePress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MeetThePress\/status\/1825166124960395506?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 18, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But both the far-right activists and top Republicans might take some comfort from Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2024\/01\/trump-2024-democracy-fascism\/\">list of extremist priorities <\/a>should he be reelected. The former president has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2024\/08\/trump-mass-deportation-plan-immigration-border-patrol-ice-dhs-migrants-undocumented\/\">pledged to carry out mass deportations<\/a>, for example, and recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-signals-openness-banning-abortion-pill-rcna165957\">signaled his openness to banning<\/a> medication abortion\u2014though his campaign subsequently denied it. And this week, Trump\u2019s campaign account on X generated controversy after it <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TrumpWarRoom\/status\/1823379465914741234\">posted<\/a> a photo of Black men on a street with the caption, \u201cYour neighborhood under Kamala.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Import the third world<\/p>\n<p>Become the third world <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MVawiHQSpm\">pic.twitter.com\/MVawiHQSpm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Trump War Room (@TrumpWarRoom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TrumpWarRoom\/status\/1823379465914741234?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 13, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In much the same way that the GOP has not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2024\/07\/gop-republican-platform-fetal-personhood-abortion-ban\/\">softened its stance on abortion<\/a>\u2014despite what they may try to make you believe\u2014Trump has not <em>really<\/em> softened at all. The problem for his supporters is that Americans\u2014even including those who are advising him\u2014just seem less and less interested in his hard-line policy positions.<\/p>\n<p>As the <em>Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2024\/08\/18\/trump-campaign-nick-fuentes-groypers-hard-right-criticism\/\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Some campaign officials previously argued that the far-right influencers offer value by amplifying political messages to their audiences. But the more overt recent attacks of Fuentes and his followers, who call themselves \u201cgroypers,\u201d have become a \u201cnoisy\u201d and counterproductive distraction to the campaign, said a person familiar with its operations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything, [Fuentes] is hurting the idea of getting fresh blood into the campaign, because it makes it far more difficult for Trump if it looks like he\u2019s responding to the groypers,\u201d the person said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked for comment, Trump\u2019s campaign referred to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/112945865832280924\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Truth Social post<\/a>\u00a0on Aug. 11 in which Trump said he was \u201cleading in almost all of the REAL polls\u201d and that his team was \u201cdoing a great job.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Author: Julianne McShane<\/p>\n<p>Source: https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2024\/08\/nick-fuentes-candace-owens-far-right-influencers-are-turning-against-trumps-campaign\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Far-right influencers are standing by their man\u2014but not his campaign.
