But since Biden\u2019s historic decision to step out of the race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, the dynamics of the race have dramatically changed. Democrats seem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/16\/us\/politics\/kamala-harris-north-carolina.html\">reenergized<\/a> and Trump and his campaign now have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2024\/08\/trump-polls-kamala-harris-vance\/679333\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2024\/08\/trump-polls-kamala-harris-vance\/679333\/\">reasons<\/a> to worry. And recent polling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/17\/us\/elections\/kamala-harris-trump-az-nc-ga-nv.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/17\/us\/elections\/kamala-harris-trump-az-nc-ga-nv.html\">numbers<\/a> show why.<\/p>\n<p>According to the latest <em>New York Times<\/em>\/Siena College poll, Harris entering the race has shaken up the political map and made crucial Sun Belt states competitive again. In Arizona, for example, Harris is now leading Trump 50 to 45 percent. She also has a narrow advantage in North Carolina, a state Trump carried in 2020. The GOP nominee is still heading in Georgia and Nevada, but the two candidates are essentially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/17\/upshot\/poll-harris-trump-sun-belt.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/17\/upshot\/poll-harris-trump-sun-belt.html\">tied<\/a> across an average of those four Sun Belt states. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/10\/us\/politics\/harris-trump-battleground-polls.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/10\/us\/politics\/harris-trump-battleground-polls.html\">earlier<\/a> <em>Times<\/em>\/Siena poll also showed Harris edging Trump in the battleground states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA dead heat is a big deal today,\u201d Nate Cohn, the <em>Times<\/em>\u2018 chief political analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/17\/upshot\/poll-harris-trump-sun-belt.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/17\/upshot\/poll-harris-trump-sun-belt.html\">writes<\/a>. \u201cIt represents a huge shift from earlier in the cycle, when Mr. Trump\u2019s relative strength over Mr. Biden among young, Black and Hispanic voters had propelled him to a surprising lead across these relatively young and diverse states.\u201d It also spells bad news for Trump, he argues, \u201cwho may need to take all three of Georgia, North Carolina and Arizona to win in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Kamala Harris puts the Sun Belt back in play, with the race tied across AZ, NC, NV, GA<br \/>\nAZ: Harris 50, Trump 45<br \/>\nGA: Trump 50, Harris 46<br \/>\nNV: Trump 48, Harris 47<br \/>\nNC: Harris 49, Trump 47<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IGTZftpHUJ\">https:\/\/t.co\/IGTZftpHUJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nate Cohn (@Nate_Cohn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Nate_Cohn\/status\/1824792331683311987?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 17, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Ahead of the Democratic National Convention next week, Harris on Friday made a campaign stop in North Carolina, where she unveiled her economic policy agenda. It includes a ban on grocery price gouging, eliminating medical debt for millions of Americans, and tackling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/16\/business\/harris-housing-plan\/index.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/16\/business\/harris-housing-plan\/index.html\">housing<\/a> affordability crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a choice in this election: Donald Trump\u2019s plans to devastate the middle class, punish working people, and make the cost of living go up for millions of Americans,\u201d Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2024\/08\/16\/remarks-by-vice-president-harris-at-a-campaign-event-in-raleigh-nc\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2024\/08\/16\/remarks-by-vice-president-harris-at-a-campaign-event-in-raleigh-nc\/\">said<\/a>, \u201cand, on the other hand, when I\u2019m elected president, what we will do to bring down costs, increase the security and stability financially of your family, and expand opportunity for working- and middle-class Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Democrats haven\u2019t won North Carolina since Barack Obama did so in 2008, some are feeling more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/16\/us\/politics\/kamala-harris-north-carolina.html\">optimistic<\/a> about Harris\u2019 chances. Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, whose name had been floated as a potential vice president pick for Harris, told the <em>Times<\/em> he hasn\u2019t felt \u201cfelt this much excitement\u201d\u00a0since Obama\u2019s win. The new <em>Times<\/em>\/Siena poll shows 85 percent of Harris voters are at least \u201csomewhat enthusiastic\u201d about voting.<\/p>\n<p>It also indicates Harris is fairing better than Biden among key Democratic constituencies. Harris, who would make history as the first woman president of the United States, has stronger support among Black voters in North Carolina and Georgia, as well as among Hispanic voters in Arizona and Nevada. She also has a 14-percentage point lead with women in Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada. \u201cMr. Trump, in turn, is maximizing his support among white voters without a college degree, winning 66 percent
