Ron DeSantis (R) is pushing his state\u2019s university system to look into former University of Florida Ben Sasse\u2019s expenses in the wake of reporting from a student newspaper on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take the stewardship of state funds very seriously and have already been in discussions with leadership at the university and with the Board of Governors to look into the matter,\u201d Bryan Griffin, a communications director for DeSantis, said in an emailed statement sent to The Hill on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida Board of Governors \u201coversees the operation and management of the Florida public university system\u2019s twelve institutions,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flbog.edu\/board\/members\/\">according to a webpage<\/a> on the State University System of Florida\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>The Independent Florida Alligator, a University of Florida student newspaper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alligator.org\/article\/2024\/08\/sasse-s-spending-spree-former-uf-president-channeled-millions-to-gop-allies-secretive-contracts\">reported<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alligator.org\/article\/2024\/08\/desantis-administration-calls-for-investigation-into-former-uf-president-ben-sasse-s-exorbitant-spending\">earlier this week<\/a> that Sasse, a former Republican U.S. senator from Nebraska, drove up spending in his office by over three times while president of the school. According to the Alligator, most of the increase in spending came from contracts with important consulting firms and well-paying roles for former Senate staff of his and Republican officials.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Sasse <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/4780971-university-florida-ben-sasse\/\">said he was planning to leave his role<\/a> as the school\u2019s president by the end of July, noting a health problem in his family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter extensive prayer and lots of family tears, I today asked UF Chair Mori Hosseini and our Board of Trustees to initiate a search for a new president of the university,\u201d Sasse said in a post on the social platform X. \u201cI need to step back for a time and focus more on the needs of my family while we rebuild more stable household systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hill has reached out to the University of Florida and the Florida Board of Governors.<\/p>\n<p>Author: Tara Suter<\/p>\n<p>Source: https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/4830541-desantis-former-uf-president-ben-sasses-expenses\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida Gov.
