Democratic strategist James Carville said on Tuesday he doesn\u2019t think Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), former President Trump\u2019s running mate, wants to get \u201cwithin 50 miles\u201d of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Vice President Harris\u2019s running mate, for a vice presidential debate.<\/p>\n

In a CNN interview ahead of Harris\u2019s first campaign event with Walz Tuesday night, Carville said he was excited about the messaging opportunity for Democrats over the next three months and pushed back against the idea that Republicans had the \u201cedge\u201d in the race.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s get the convention behind us,\u201d Carville said on \u201cThe Lead\u201d with Jake Tapper. \u201cI don\u2019t think Trump wants to debate. JD Vance don\u2019t want to get within 50 miles of Governor Walz, I can tell you that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of football left to play here, and I\u2019m excited,” Carville continued. “And I\u2019m tired of banging my helmet against the locker. Let\u2019s go out there and play some ball. We\u2019re ready. We\u2019re excited, Jake, we really are.”<\/p>\n

Tapper asked what message Carville wants to see from the Democratic ticket in the coming months to push back against \u201cthe edge\u201d Trump might have in the race \u201cbecause it\u2019s a change election and he has been leading in the polls.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, first of all, not call Trump a change candidate. He\u2019s a backwards candidate. We\u2019re not talking about four years from now. He wants to talk about four years ago. And I think that\u2019s a pretty simple dynamic on our part,\u201d Carville told Tapper when asked for his advice to Harris and Walz.<\/p>\n

He stressed the importance of delivering an economic message.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I would like to see is come down tough on the side of consumers. Come down tough on corporate price fixing and price gouging. I think this would be something that would be eminently beneficial,\u201d Carville said.<\/p>\n

Walz, in his first appearance Tuesday night as Harris\u2019s running mate, came out swinging<\/a> against the Republican ticket, taking aim especially at his vice presidential rival, Vance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just have to say it. You know it. You feel it. These guys are creepy and, yes, just weird as hell. That\u2019s what you see,\u201d Walz said to raucous applause from the rally crowd in Philadelphia, using the viral new framing of the Trump campaign as \u201cweird.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike all regular people I grew up with in the heartland, JD studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires, and then wrote a bestseller trashing that community. Come on! That\u2019s not what middle America is,\u201d Walz said, adding that he \u201ccan\u2019t wait to debate the guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last month, when Harris was the vice-presidential running mate and Biden led the ticket, Vance said<\/a>, \u201cObviously we want to debate Vice President Harris because it\u2019s important for the American people to see the contrast,\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hill reached out to the Trump-Vance campaign for comment.<\/p>\n

The prospect of a debate<\/a> between the two major candidates remains unclear, as of early August.<\/p>\n

Trump over the weekend said his agreement to attend a Sept. 10 debate on ABC News\u00a0had been \u201cterminated,\u201d<\/a> with Biden out of the race. Trump instead said he would be willing to attend a Sept. 4 debate in Pennsylvania hosted by Fox News with a full audience.<\/p>\n

Harris\u2019s team\u00a0called out Trump<\/a>\u00a0for backing out of the ABC News debate and said the vice president intends to\u00a0use that time<\/a>\u00a0to appear on the network regardless of whether he attends.<\/p>\n

Trump in recent weeks increasingly has hedged about debating Harris, initially saying he would \u201cabsolutely\u201d square off with the vice president, but later saying he could think of reasons not to do so.<\/p>\n
