Why the Far Right’s Rage Is Growing—And Why We Must Fight Harder Than Ever
In recent years, we’ve watched the far right’s anger explode—from violent insurrections to book bans, attacks on education, and efforts to suppress voting rights. It might seem like they are gaining ground, but in reality, this is a desperate reaction. What we’re witnessing is not just political turmoil—it’s a well-documented psychological phenomenon called an extinction burst.
What Is an Extinction Burst?
In behavioral science, an extinction burst happens when a behavior that was once rewarded is no longer reinforced. Instead of disappearing immediately, the behavior becomes more extreme before it finally dies out.
This concept applies to everything from individual habits to large-scale social movements. When someone loses control over something they once dominated—whether it’s a child throwing a tantrum after being denied a toy or a reactionary movement losing cultural influence—their first instinct is to fight harder, louder, and more aggressively.
And that’s exactly what we’re seeing now.
Why Is the Far Right in an Extinction Burst?
For decades, conservative white America held a dominant position in politics, culture, and policy. They controlled the narrative, dictated social norms, and benefited from systemic advantages in government, business, and media.
But over the past few decades, that grip has been slipping.
🔵 The election of Barack Obama shattered the illusion that the presidency—and ultimate power—belonged only to white men.
🔵 The U.S. has become more diverse and younger generations are overwhelmingly progressive on issues like LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, and climate action.
🔵 Women, people of color, and marginalized groups have gained influence, visibility, and political power in ways that were unthinkable just a few decades ago.
🔵 Economic and social inequality, once hidden under the guise of “American exceptionalism,” is now being called out and challenged.
To those who believe they are entitled to power, this feels like a direct attack on their way of life. Their response? A full-scale, reactionary backlash.
How the Far Right Is Fighting Back
When a dominant group starts losing power, they don’t simply accept it. Instead, they lash out in a desperate attempt to hold on. The far right’s current wave of rage isn’t just anger—it’s an extinction burst in real time.
🔥 Banning books that discuss race, gender, or historical injustices to control what people learn.
🔥 Attacking voting rights to prevent young, diverse, and progressive voices from shaping the future.
🔥 Restricting education by targeting teachers and rewriting history to promote nationalism.
🔥 Demonizing the media to undermine truth and fuel conspiracy theories.
🔥 Embracing authoritarian leaders who promise to “restore order” by suppressing opposition.
🔥 Rolling back reproductive rights in an effort to control women and reinforce traditionalist values.
🔥 Encouraging political violence by framing democratic processes as illegitimate.
These are not random acts of conservative policy-making. These are the death throes of a movement that knows it is losing control.
The Danger: Extinction Bursts Can Go One of Two Ways
Here’s where things get critical. Extinction bursts don’t always end in failure. If reinforced, they can become permanent.
If the far right’s tactics succeed—if they scare enough people into silence, suppress enough votes, or erode enough democratic institutions—they will cement their power for generations.
And history has shown us what happens when extremists win.
Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Francoist Spain, Pinochet’s Chile—all of these regimes rose not because their ideas were popular, but because people underestimated them until it was too late.
The U.S. is at a breaking point. Either we allow this extinction burst to succeed, or we fight back so hard that it finally dies out for good.
What We Must Do to Overpower Them
The far right is loud, aggressive, and determined. But we are stronger. And if we don’t resist even louder, even harder, we risk losing everything we’ve fought for.
1. Vote in Every Election—No Exceptions
Elections aren’t just about presidents. Governors, mayors, school boards, judges—all of these positions shape policy and laws. The far right counts on low voter turnout to push through their extremist agenda. We cannot let them win by default.
2. Drown Out Their Lies With Truth
Misinformation is their greatest weapon. They use fear and deception to manipulate people into voting against their own interests. We must call out lies, fact-check relentlessly, and spread the truth.
3. Push Progressive Policies Relentlessly
Compromise with extremism only enables it. We need bold, unapologetic policies that:
✅ Protect voting rights
✅ Expand education access
✅ Strengthen labor movements
✅ Defend reproductive freedom
✅ Combat climate change
✅ Hold corporate elites accountable
4. Mobilize & Engage
Change doesn’t happen online alone. It happens in communities, workplaces, and on the streets.
- Support progressive organizations.
- Attend rallies and protests.
- Organize at the local level.
- Have tough conversations with family and friends.
5. Never Become Complacent
The biggest mistake we can make is believing the fight is over. Progress is not permanent unless we defend it. Every right we have today—from voting rights to LGBTQ+ protections to workplace laws—was won through activism. And they can be taken away if we stop fighting.
The Future Is in Our Hands
The rage of the far right is a sign that we are winning—but only if we continue to push forward.
If we hesitate, if we allow them to intimidate us, if we give up too soon, they will take back power, and we may not get another chance to fight.
They are lashing out because they are afraid of change.
Let’s make sure they have every reason to be.
🚨 Will you let them win? Or will you fight for the future? 🚨
